History of Kingwood Rugby Club

At first it was just a group of high school boys tossing around a rugby ball in Kingwood, Texas. Then students that weren’t getting field time in other sports took notice and began playing. Students who had lived overseas and knew about the sport of rugby joined in. This group of players and fast friends became a rugby team.img_9998-s

Named for the city of Kingwood, the Kingwood Rugby Club was begun in 2004. The team became affiliated with the local high school and was designated as a high school club sport. The Rugby Club received school support, but no financial backing. The first years were challenging. As the club grew and improved, the students of Kingwood High School began to recognize the fun and comradery that makes rugby unique. More players were recruited and the Kingwood Rugby Club grew to become a recognized name in Texas Rugby.232323232-fp93232-ydnjthgqubwsnrcgu7798-nu9456-9-236-wsnrcg42-4-66879327nu0mrj

Over the last 12 years, the Kingwood Rugby Club has strengthened and established itself as a competitive force in rugby, sending both boys and girls to advanced select teams (Rugby Texas High Performance, USA Rugby High School All Americans, Stars and Stripes, Serevi, Texas Selects & USA Youth Olympic Rugby Team). The boys’ team has competed in the Texas State Championships twice, earning Runner Up in 2013 and Third Place in 2016. The girls’ team has competed in the Texas State Championships four times. They were State Champions in 2013, Runner Up in 2014, Third Place in 2015 and Runner Up in 2016.210

The Kingwood Rugby Club is a 501c3 charitable organization overseen by an all-volunteer board of directors. The Kingwood Rugby Club and its board are committed to supporting and growing the sport of rugby. In 2015, the club became a multi-school affiliated club, drawing players for both the boy’s and girls’ high school teams from Atascocita High School, Kingwood High School and Kingwood Park High School.

Education about rugby is being promoted in the area’s middle schools with plans for formation of youth teams in the near future. To better represent our multi-school membership and the upcoming youth teams, in the summer of 2016, the club decided to take the name Lake Houston Rugby Club.2
